Area counties qualify for emergency loans
Farmers and ranchers in Bexar and seven surrounding counties qualify for emergency assistance from the U.S. Department of Agriculture because of natural disaster designations the department declared this week.
Forty Texas counties, including Bexar, were designated primary natural disaster areas. Counties adjacent to those counties also qualify for low-interest emergency loans from the USDA’s Farm Service Agency as a result of the designation.
Losses caused by the drought, excessive heat, high winds and wildfires since Jan. 1, 2011, can be partially covered by the loans. Farmers in the designated counties have eight months to prove eligibility and to apply for the assistance.
“President (Barack) Obama and I are committed to using the resources at our disposal to reduce the impact of these disasters on Texas producers and help get those affected back on their feet,” Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said in a news release.
Uvalde County west of San Antonio also was designated a primary natural disaster area, as was Llano County north of San Antonio and Nueces County southwest of the city.
